Portrait Painting with Seth Haverkamp
March 7-11, 2022
9:00 am − 4:00 pm
In this 5-day portrait painting workshop Seth will demonstrate and discuss how to paint a multi-layered portrait.
Working both from life and from photos Seth will provide, we will paint multiple portraits over the course of 5 days. We will work in oils with a limited palette of 8 colors. We will start by using large masses and shapes of brown paint to sculpt the light and get the drawing accurate. After the basic shapes are in the correct spot, we will build up mass and three-dimension by applying paint dark to light, big to small. Day two will consist of starting color, finalizing the drawing, and starting to detail features. Day three will focus on layering color and building upon a solid foundation to start finishing our portrait. Day 4 and 5 will be focusing on layering and applying paint in a specific way to get realistic results.
Main focus for the workshop:
•. A specific technique Seth has developed to get a unique look and how to successfully paint a many layered portrait working on top of the previous days painting without repainting.
•. There will be many demonstrations throughout the workshop. Working everyday on a portrait from life and a portrait from photos. This will demonstrate firsthand the differences and similarities between the two.
•. How to use strong colors and less color mixing to get beautiful and realistic skin tones
•. Backgrounds will be discussed and demonstrated
